Independent from 1960 to 1988 the Motown record label was perhaps the most influential independent of all time. In a period of incredible global upheaval and tension, Motown brought people of all colours and creeds together in appreciation of life, joy, freedom to experiment, and to be all the odd and awesome things an individual can be. Indie is the spirit of the Motown Sound, it’s what connects music as diverse as everything under the Motown umbrella was, from the passionate electro experiments and tortured, gospel infused sex poetry of Marvin Gaye, to the easy 1,2, 3 delight of the Jackson Five. It’s why they were the Sound of Young America, and implicit in the slogan was an embrace for youth of all flavours, and of the way we can’t help but love and hope and howl and dance and sweat when we are young, and the way this can change the world
Many of these artists burned themselves out with the flame of their belief in the possibility of creating with their art and acts of connection a more honest and joyful reality. Others were taken from us. And they were not people who believed in hate or violence or revenge, and so today, in this moment, all we can do about the tragedy is to be thankful, and work and dance and sing hard in their memory.
